Autism and Antidepressants?
From 1994 to 2005, the number of children in the United States taking part in special education programs for autism increased from 22,664 to 193,637. From 1996 to 2005, the number of Americans taking antidepressants nearly doubled to the point where ten percent of the population had a prescription for at least one antidepressant.
It’s difficult not to see a relationship between these two statistics. In fact, a new study shows a direct correlation between pregnant women who take antidepressants—specifically, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) like Zoloft and Paxil—and then give birth to children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
Weight loss breakthrough?
Diseases related to obesity and high blood sugar are more prevalent these days. As of a study conducted in 2010, 33.8% of adults were considered obese. Almost 100 million people in the United States have diabetes of prediabetes. These problems are highly prevalent in Canada and many other nations as well. These diseases are serious and lead to lifelong health complications.
Which countries spend the most on health care?
When healthcare spending is examined on a global level, major differences are revealed in how countries approach the health needs of their people. The countries that spend the most on healthcare spend about 16 times more than the countries that spend the least on healthcare. However, the cost of healthcare does not equate to longevity. For example, while the United States spends more than any other country on healthcare, it ranks 27th overall because residents only live an average of 77 years.
